At first glance,
this may appear to be just another needless remake.
But looks can be deceiving in ``The Parent Trap,'' a hit
that's a double charm for grownups and children alike in a
very ‘90s spin of the original.
Lindsay Lohan plays both Hallie Parker and Annie James
(shades of Patty Duke!), girls who first meet at a girls’
camp. Hallie lives in the Napa Valley with her dad Nick
Parker (Dennis Quaid), while Annie lives with her mother,
Elizabeth James (Natasha Richardson), a prominent wedding
gown designer.
At first, the girls take an instant dislike for each other .
But when they realize they're much more than look-alikes --
they’re twins, in fact -- they try to piece together why
their parents divorced and why the girls have been
separated. With each longing to see the parent she never has
known, they devise a scheme: They'll switch places, and
eventually bring their folks back together again. There's
one glitch: Nick is about to marry the gold-digging Meredith
Blake (Elaine Hendrix). Lindsay, whose is face is familiar
from dozens of television commercials and her appearances on
soaps ``Another World'' and ``The Guiding Light.'' She is
simply phenomenal -- so talented in fact, that you can tell
just by her expression which twin she is portraying.
Other recognizable faces include Polly Holliday, who played
Flo on the television series ``Alice,'' plays the leader of
the girls' camp. And that's Joanna Barnes as Meredith's
mother. Barnes played the outside love interest in the
original film.
It's a joyous blend of comedy and romance that’s so sweet
you might want to see it twice.
Rated PG.
