Not exactly a Christmas
movie, but with a Christmas pageant at its core, "Simon
Birch" is all about miracles.Portrayed adorably by Ian
Michael Smith, Simon is a teeny bit of a child who has
several physical problems. That makes him the laughing stock
of many of his peers, especially when Simon talks about
being chosen by God for a divine mission. "Things will be
different once God makes me a hero," he promises his best
friend, Joe (Joseph Mazzello, "Jurassic Park,'' as a child;
Jim Carrey as an adult). Despite his uncaring parents and
stern admonitions from the town minister, Simon is fiercely
loyal to his own set of beliefs and faith -- even when he
accidentally becomes responsible for the death of Joe's
beloved mother. Meanwhile, Joe continues to wonder about the
identity of his real father. And both boys must struggle
with an annual trial by fire: The church Christmas pageant,
which includes a reluctant Simon as the Baby Jesus and an
angel who's afraid of heights. "Simon Birch" truly is worth
your acquaintance. It's rated PG.
