"The Mighty" is a
beautiful film, suitable for families with older kids, and
why it didn't become a sleeper hit I'll never know. Based on
the book “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick, the show is
a little like “My Bodyguard” in that two misfit kids partner
to overcome their difficulties. Elden Henson is Max Kane, a
lumbering, quiet kid in seventh grade who refuses to avenge
himself on the kids who tease him about being slow. His life
changes when Kevin Dillon (Kieran Culkin) moves in next
door. Kevin is small for his age, and faces multiple
physical challenges. But he’s intelligent, imaginative and
creative, and he becomes Max’s reading tutor. Max and Kevin
almost literally become a single person as, with Kevin on
Max’s shoulders, they become a bigger-than-life entity. Both
boys have secrets they keep from each other, and both help
each other with their secret struggles. Both young actors
are outstanding, and, believe it or not, Sharon Stone is
simply superb as Kevin’s careworn but tender mother.
Likewise, Gena Rowlands and Harry Dean Stanton are great as
Max’s grandparents; and Gillian Anderson is a hoot as a
shady lady who has lost her purse to the ruffians that
torment Max and Kevin. It's rated PG-13 for adult situations
and some profanity.
